Trace Labs Capture the Flag
October 19 @ 10:00 am – 6:00 pm MDT
The Trace Labs leadership team will be onsite hosting a 4 hour Search Party CTF during WWHF. The “CTF” will feature active missing persons cases that law enforcement has requested the public’s assistance with. The “flags” in this CTF are key pieces of intelligence that our LE partners have denoted as useful to their investigation. Teams of up to four people will compete to find these “flags” for the missing persons cases featured in the CTF. Intelligence collection is entirely passive and will consist mostly of sketching out a person’s online footprint. More information about the event can be found at: https://www.tracelabs.org/initiatives/search-party
The Trace Labs team will be in person at a booth on Thursday and Friday to answer questions, share resources, and to get everyone up to speed on the mechanics of the CTF. Additionally, the team will be working WITH the contestants over the course of the CTF. The intent of the event isn’t to “win” but to collect intelligence that could assist law enforcement.
You can register at searchparty.tracelabs.org/register using the registration code that we will share during WWHF. The link will become active during WWHF when the platform is live.
Prizes
The TraceLabs team will at the very least award the top prizes, and TraceLabs Challenge Coins, to the team that earns our Most Valuable OSINT. The MVO also receives the TraceLabs Black Badge, which is a distinct honor and also allows free entry to any of our future events.
The MVO is not necessarily the top point-earner, but rather the team that submits a piece of intelligence that meets as many of these criteria as possible:
- Highly Actionable
- Unique OSINT Technique Used
- High level of difficulty to find
- Exceptional context and supporting evidence provide
As we have a variety of additional sponsors, there may be prizes for the top scoring teams, but we maintain that the highest prize goes to MVO. We are working on confirming additional prizes for MVO and others.
All participants will have the opportunity to request a digital badge, which we issue from Badgr. A form will be communicated for any participant to fill out to receive a digital badge.
